Activity description
Dive into Rio de Janeiro's past. Journey through time, from the discovery of Brazil, the arrival of the royal family, to its independence and proclamation of the republic.
Discover the historic past of Rio de Janeiro, once Brazil's capital for nearly two centuries, on a walking tour of the city center, which holds memories of different eras. Also note the contrast with the new Praça Mauá, a legacy of the Olympics that forever marked the lives of Rio residents, creating a new hub of entertainment and culture, housing two new museums—the Rio Art Museum and the Museum of Tomorrow—and the famous Cobra murals.
Through the architecture, the Colonial, Imperial and Republican periods of Rio can be identified.
This journey into the past begins at the doors of the Museum of Tomorrow and the Rio Art Museum, from which you'll enjoy a sweeping view of the Olympic Boulevard. From there, we'll visit the Monastery of São Bento, founded in 1590 by two monks from Bahia and considered one of the most important Brazilian architectural heritage sites.
Afterwards, we will head to the Candelária Church, whose construction, in neoclassical style, began in 1630 and was completed in 1775.
Afterwards, we will continue along Rua Primeiro de Março, highlighting Casa França-Brasil, the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center and the Post Office building until we reach Praça XV where the Imperial Palace is located, built to be the residence of the captaincy's governors, having also served as a residence for the Royal Family, when they arrived in Brazil, and also the Tiradentes Palace.
From Praça XV, we'll head to Cinelândia, the final stop of the tour, where you can admire the beauty of the Municipal Theater, the Legislative Assembly, the National Library, and the Museum of Fine Arts. From there, we'll return to our hotels.
