Reims: the City of Kings
Reims, in the Champagne region of France, is a beautiful city with many medieval buildings, where you can discover the imposing Notre Dame Cathedral, a Gothic-style church built in the 13th century that became the official coronation site for the vast majority of French kings.
There's nothing like taking a short city tour to visit Reims's essential landmarks: the Cathedral, but also the Palais de Tau, the former episcopal palace, and the Place Royale, one of the city's most important landmarks, which once housed a statue of Louis XIV, destroyed during the Revolution. See the Hôtel de Ville (town hall), with its richly decorated Renaissance-style facade, and finally, head to the Porte de Mars, the city's oldest monument, measuring 33 meters wide and 13 meters high. It's the widest arch in the Roman world.
In the footsteps of the “King of Wines”
Next, learn about the history of Champagne, a sparkling wine known as the "King of Wines" for its fascinating fine taste and its association with luxury and sophistication. The monk Dom Pérignon was the first to produce sparkling wines in the region in the 17th century, soon followed by other producers. Epernay, the capital of the region, is where you can visit the cellars of the main Champagne brands, including Möet & Chandon, which offers guided tours in Portuguese. We suggest lunch at the excellent Château Les Crayères (a Relais & Châteaux chain) in France. Stroll through the historic center and visit the Cathedral, a majestic Gothic-style work. Journey through the vineyards of Mont Reims.
