Very close to Quito is Ecuador's second-highest volcano, the Cotopaxi volcano, which stands at 5,897 meters above sea level and is still active. On our day trip, you can visit this protected area and climb to the first refuge at 4,864 meters above sea level.
Itinerary:
We'll leave Quito early in the morning and take the Pan-American Highway south. We'll make a short stop at the beginning to buy something to eat (food not included), use the restrooms, and use the ATM.
Next, we enter Cotopaxi National Park, where passengers register to access the protected area. Once inside the national park, the trip will include the following stops:
First stop: Limpiopungo Lagoon. From here, we'll observe various bird species, native plants, and nearby volcanoes that surround the park.
Second stop: Mariscal Sucre Interpretation Center. Our itinerary includes a visit to an exhibition featuring photographs and key information for those interested in learning more about the Cotopaxi volcano and its surroundings.
Third stop: Cotopaxi Volcano Base Camp. The journey begins at the parking lot and heads to the José Rivas shelter, located at 4,864 meters above sea level. This stop also requires a hike of at least an hour. The road is steep, and the scenery is stunning. Enjoy the hike at your own pace with your tour guide.
On the way back to Quito, we'll stop for lunch at a restaurant near Cotopaxi. We recommend trying the delicious potato locro or chicken broth to warm you up. (Lunch not included)
