Paris, the City of Lights, has an incredibly dark and stormy past. Before earning its reputation for culture, art, fashion, and romance, the city endured centuries of conflict—brutal murders, torture, and beheadings, political and social unrest, brutal monarchies and wars, and terrible plagues. This tour will bring to life Paris's mysterious and often horrific past—its ghosts, legends, and historical figures. You'll see both little-visited and well-known landmarks in a whole new light!
Our ghost and legend night tour will take you through dark, winding alleys—the perfect way to soak up the mysterious atmosphere and imagine Paris in a very different era. In the beautiful and romantic Square du Vert-Galant—created in honor of Henry IV and his mistresses and recently declared an "ecological green space"—your guide will describe a different scene, when the last Knight Templar was burned at the stake here.
You'll visit the 7th-century church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois and learn how and why some 30,000 Huguenots were killed in the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572. You'll discover that the Palais de Justice—which received the Emperor's Grand Prix as the greatest work of art produced in France during that decade—was where the unfortunate were tried guilty during the French Revolution and sentenced to the guillotine before cheering crowds, whether they were kings or revolutionaries!
Beginning with stories of ancient worship rituals, you'll travel back in time as your guide recreates scenes from the terrible plagues, the French Revolution, the Paris Commune, and the Nazi occupation. They'll introduce you to famous historical figures like Napoleon Bonaparte, Marie Antoinette, and Henry IV, as well as serial killers who used to prey on the city's inhabitants... perhaps in some of the same alleys you'll be walking through!
Get off the beaten path, away from the tourist crowds of typical tours, and discover the dark side that hides beneath Paris's beautiful and romantic surface. Notes: *Times to choose from for booking confirmation: 7:30 pm / 9:00 pm
