- Guided tour of the Lorvão Monastery, the oldest religious house in Portugal
A few kilometers from Coimbra, in the village of Lorvão, lies the oldest monastery in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. An ancient and powerful religious house, the Lorvão Monastery left a legacy of great historical and cultural value, both nationally and internationally—although still little known to most.
During our visit, we'll explore its history and traditions. The itinerary includes the monastery's preserved grounds, such as the imposing church, and the Interpretation Center, where important relics are kept, including two books recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We'll also visit the museum dedicated to a famous Portuguese tradition that originated in Lorvão (the mystery will be revealed at the appropriate time) and a craft shop that recreates the atmosphere of the village and monastic spaces.
We will also stop at a local bakery to taste traditional sweets created in the monastery itself.
Lorvão is only accessible by car, taxi, or Uber. For those staying in Coimbra, we'll arrange a taxi or Uber ride together. If you'd prefer to start your journey directly in Lorvão, please contact us so we can arrange a price. From the meeting point in the village, the journey will be easy and virtually hill-free.
