A few kilometers from the city of Coimbra, in the village of Lorvão, lies the oldest monastery in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. Once a powerful religious house in Portugal, the Lorvão Monastery left a national and international legacy of great value, though often unknown to most. We will explore its past and traditions. Our visit naturally includes the surviving outbuildings of the Lorvão Monastery (including the fabulous church), the Interpretation Center, which displays several relics from the monastery (including two books recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites), the Museum dedicated to a very popular Portuguese tradition originating in Lorvão (which one? I'll reveal later), and a craft shop (which recreates Lorvão and the monastery grounds). There is also time to visit a pastry shop selling sweets originating from the monastery. Unfortunately, the only way to reach Lorvão is by car, taxi, or Uber. For those in Coimbra who wish to visit this place, we will depart together by taxi or Uber towards Lorvão. If you prefer to start your visit in Lorvão, please contact me; prices will be reviewed. Our route, starting in Lorvão, will be easily accessible, with virtually no hills.
