The Longest Day
Two events, separated by nine centuries, attract tourists from all over the world to this isolated region of Normandy. One of them, less known,
It happened in the year 1066, when William the Conqueror, at the head of the Norman army, crossed the English Channel from France to England in Viking ships, to defeat the English at the Battle of Hastings and become the first king of France and England.
The other, more recent one, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was D-Day, also known as "the longest day." This date charted a new course for World War II and changed the course of humanity.
After visiting Caen, almost destroyed during the war and known as the "Martyr City," and the Peace Museum, you will be thrilled to visit the places where the Allies fought to regain freedom. Explore Omaha, Utah, and Juno beaches, where the Americans landed and had to face mines, barbed wire, French cannons captured by the Germans, the famous obstacles called "porcupines," and German machine gun fire. Continue to Pointe du Hoc, a cliff located between Omaha and Utah beaches, where the Rangers' objective was to neutralize artillery and cut the road behind the point.
