Essaouira was discovered by the Phoenicians, who settled there. It was later conquered by Rome and then Portugal. In the late 15th century, Portugal built the commercial and military port of Mogador, today's Essaouira. This port was built at the foot of the city walls. In 1769, the Navy built a port to connect the port's cargo docks with the city. From this port, a small bridge leads to the port of Skala and the walls that divide the old city into several sections. In the medina, explore Moulay El-Hassan Square, the Grand Mosque, and Siaghine Street. From the north terrace of the Bastion, you can access the carpentry workshop, where Morocco's finest cedar carvers work.
Leaving Skala, we'll head along Derb Laalouj Street to the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah Museum. Here, musical instruments, local Andalusian songs, Berber Imazighen documents, weapons, clothing, carpets, and much more are displayed in the Pasha's former residence. Located in the north of the city is Mellah, a Jewish neighborhood crossed by the traditional Rue Mohammed Zerktouni, bordered by a market that extends to Bab Doukkala.
