It was built by King Henry II, who liked to impress and intimidate pilgrims on his route to Canterbury. The build-up to Operation Dynamo, a daring and successful operation to rescue British soldiers (and their allies) who were being massacred by German troops on the beach at Dunkirk, France, was one of the most significant events in the Castle's history.
