- UNESCO Jewels: Tivoli and its Villas in Rome

Just a few kilometers from Rome, we find a world-famous city, home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Tivoli. It was here that, in the second century AD, Emperor Hadrian built his majestic villa, a luxurious country residence where he retired and spent his final years. The immense complex includes more than 30 buildings, several pools, ancient thermal baths, and covers an area larger than one square kilometer, giving us a good idea of the grandeur of the site, designed to showcase the emperor's opulence and vast power.
In the 16th century, much of the marble and statues remaining from Hadrian's Villa were removed by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este to decorate his own nearby villa: Villa d'Este, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Extensively decorated with frescoes inside, the villa is surrounded by a unique garden with a complex system of pools, jets, fountains, and waterfalls. What makes this fountain system such an incredible masterpiece of engineering is that it operates entirely by gravity, without the use of pumps.
Leaving Rome in the morning, we'll have half a day to explore these architectural beauties accompanied by a professional guide, who will provide us with an audio receiver and headphones so we don't miss a thing! And we won't have to worry about the logistics of getting to Tivoli: we can opt for our shuttle service from our centrally located hotel or, if we prefer to save money, we can meet directly at the meeting point.
