The experience begins at the top of Passeig de Gràcia, before traveling to experience the natural splendor of Montserrat, Catalonia's most emblematic mountain. Topped by a Benedictine monastery, Montserrat is an ideal half-day trip for a fun day in nature, just a few kilometers from Barcelona. On the way to the monastery, admire the Montserrat Massif, a spectacular multi-peaked rocky mountain range dotted with unique needle-like formations. Upon arrival, visit the monastery, which was founded in the 10th century and still operates today, with over 70 monks. It is also known for housing the figure of La Moreneta (visit not guaranteed), who is the patron saint of Catalonia. Your guide will bring the story to life, explaining the history and accomplishments of this monastery, which dates back almost a thousand years.
Board the Sant Joan railway to observe the region's fascinating flora and fauna. The tour continues with a gentle walk filled with verdant beauty as you admire the scenic landscape of Montserrat Natural Park. To recharge your batteries after the hike, you'll sample the typical Catalan bread, Coca de Montserrat, from one of the local farmers. The sweetest way to end this wonderful excursion.
You'll have free time. Visit the farmers' market. Visit the coffee shop. Check out the souvenir shops. Escolania is a male choir of sopranos and altos based in the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat, near Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Meet back up with your guide for the bus ride back to Barcelona.
