From the historical town to the Cinque Terre ... on www.visitgenoa.it
I live very close to the city center and main touristic sites. Genoa is nowadays one of the main touristic attractions in Italy. Far less crowded and expensive than other famous cities however as beautiful , to say the least. I rent rooms and manage my own b&b in a beautiful apartment where I live, an historical piace in itself. Please check Le Stanze del Notaio , Genova. The aprtment dates back to the beginning of the XIX century and has a unique antique flair with its wood carvings and marble floors. The ideal walking tour that I suggest to my guests upon arrival is to take bus n 18 to the Piazza Principe Train Station (15 min ride) then wander around the Italian style, Renaissance gardens of the Palazzo del Principe, with its beautiful Neptune's fountain . The Palace itself is well worth a visit . Then it is a good idea to stroll down via Balbi and check out the Trogoli, or Old Baths , the Royal Palace and the Church of SS Vittore and Carlo. Via Balbi will lead the turist in Piazza dell'Annunziata , in front of one of the most beautiful and oldest Churches , the Basilica of the Santissima Annunziata del Vastato, where you can admire masterpieces of painting and wood sculpture. From there keep walking through via Lomellini, Via San Luca , Via Cairoli and Via Garibaldi, the oldest street in Genoa, now a pedestrian cobble way surrounded by the oldest italian mansions dating from the Lower Middle Ages , i Palazzi dei Rolli, built by the noble families of Genoa to show off their wealth and host Kings, Queens and Diplomats from all over Europe. From via Garibaldi we easily reach Piazza De Ferrari, the main square in Genoa with its large fountain. Walkers can stroll back to the apartment through Via San Lorenzo , where the Cathedral with its treasure lays. Move then down via San Lorenzo to Piazza Caricamento to admire the frescoes of Palazzo San Giorgio. From there you can still pay a visit to Porto Antico with the Acquarium , The Palace of the Commenda in Via Gramsci and then head back to the b&b.. Genoa is famous for its old, cobbled alleys , forming the Historical Center, dating from the middle ages
