Nothing in the world of water compares to or is more impressive than the natural spectacle provided by the group of 275 waterfalls that form the Iguaçu Falls.
Located a few kilometers from the junction of the Iguaçu River and the Paraná River, the waterfalls are impressive due to their size, water flow and the strength of the currents.
The geological shift that created Iguaçu Falls occurred about 150 million years ago and shook the Earth's crust around the globe. In the Iguaçu region, these changes created a gigantic canyon with rocky steps through which the Iguaçu River flows, producing a huge cloud of steam and a deafening sound.
The average flow of the Falls is about 1,800 m3 per second, an average of 10 million liters per second. During the rainy season, the river's flow increases, producing an even more beautiful spectacle.
The largest waterfall is the Devil's Throat, 90 meters high. The sheer volume of water creates a cloud of droplets that can be seen from miles away.
The adventure begins at the entrance to Macuco Safari, located within Iguaçu National Park. Board an open-air jeep that offers panoramic views of the landscape along the trail. During the three-kilometer stretch through the jungle, guides will point out examples of the park's flora and fauna: orchids, palm trees, bromeliads, ancient trees, and even wild animals that occasionally cross the trail.
The hike is the second phase of our journey. A 600-meter stretch that leads to a waterfall called Queda Macuco, approximately 20 meters high. Perfect for a refreshing dip on hot days. The last stop is the Macuco Safari pier, on the Brazilian banks of the Iguaçu River.
On the water, twin-engine inflatable boats await us. They are built safely and efficiently to withstand the challenges of the excursion. Before boarding, passengers receive life jackets and plastic containers to store their photography and filming equipment. The boat travels up the river, crossing the canyon and facing the rapids at a speed that allows us to appreciate the scenery.
Large rocks covered in vegetation and animals form the landscape up to Devil's Throat, at the base of the falls.
