- Excursion to the Argentine Falls
The Iguazu Falls are located within the Iguazu National Park, about 20 kilometers from the city of Puerto Iguazú, in the province of Misiones, in northern Argentina. The river that forms them, also called the Iguazu, originates in the state of Paraná, Brazil, and after traveling about 1,200 kilometers through a plateau, absorbing the volume of water from the tributaries it encounters along the way, it reaches a point where a geological fault creates a crack in the plain. This coincides with the passage of a river flowing through a tranquil landscape, without major jolts, gradually encountering a succession of waterfalls. And suddenly, a drop of about 80 meters appears, transforming it into a violent sensation of vertigo: the Devil's Throat, the main drop of the Falls, combined with a constant and deafening roar that sinks into the depths before flowing gently, a few kilometers away, into the Paraná River.
In the Guarani language, the term Iguaçu means "Big Waters." They were discovered by European explorers in 1541, led by the adelantado Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca. In 1984, UNESCO declared them a Natural World Heritage Site, and in 2011, an international competition named Iguaçu Falls one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World.
One of the many legends tells the story of a giant serpent called "Boi" who lived in the river. To appease its ferocity, the indigenous people sacrificed a young woman once a year, throwing her into the waters as an offering to the beast. On one such occasion, a brave Guarani man kidnapped the chosen young woman to save her from the traditional ritual, escaping with her in a canoe downriver. Upon learning of this audacity, Boi became furious and, bending his back, opened the river's course, thus creating the waterfalls and forever separating the two indigenous peoples.
