ITINERARY
We begin the excursion towards Chongoyape (80 km southeast of Chiclayo), from where we will depart to this dry forest conservation ecological reserve with a local guide.
We'll pass through stunning locations, enjoying the scenery. Later, we'll reach Jardín Encantado (Enchanted Garden) in the Chaparri Private Conservation Area. This reserve covers 34,142 hectares and is considered a sacred mountain (Cerro Chaparri) by the inhabitants of this part of Peru. Here, we'll follow the Spectacled Bear Trail, the Huachuma or San Pedro Trail, and the White-Winged Guan Trail.
During our tour, we will observe a great diversity of flora and endemic birds such as the red-headed parrot, the Peruvian owl, the emerald parakeet, the scrub nightjar, the Tumbes swift, the short-tailed starling, the red-backed woodpecker, the Peruvian woodpecker, and the Pacific fjord. The Chaparri is home to many other birds found only here, such as the black-bellied nightjar and the Tumbes woodpecker, among many others. The Chaparri is home to endangered species such as the spectacled bear, the Andean condor, and the white-winged guan, for which conservation and reintroduction projects are underway. It is also home to coastal foxes, guanacos, peccaries, deer, pumas, vultures, hummingbirds, reptiles and more.
You'll also visit the spectacled bear rescue center. Here, bears rescued from illegal captivity are rehabilitated until they can be released into the wild. Here, we'll meet one of its permanent residents, 'Cuto,' a bear rescued from a circus and now cared for by rangers in a natural environment. Bears rescued from illegal captivity are rehabilitated at this center, where they learn to fend for themselves until they can be released into the wild.
We continue our visit along the Huachuma Route, where we will learn about shamanism sessions, their meaning and respect for the Apus (mountain spirits). We continue and visit the reptarium and learn about different snakes in the area, amphibians, their way of life and their characteristics.
Finally, we visited the Interpretation Center, which explains in detail the area's biodiversity, how to protect it, and the value of this wonderful dry forest ecosystem. After our visit to this northern paradise, we detoured to the Tinajones dam, which supplies water to Lambayeque. Besides enjoying the scenery, we could observe birds such as eagles and herons, among others.
We returned to Chiclayo.
