The Great Ice Walk is a full-day excursion that begins with pickup in El Calafate.
On the way to Los Glaciares National Park, tour guides will provide information about the activity, the location, and the glacier.
Upon arrival at the “Bajo de las Sombras” port (Route 11, 70 km from El Calafate), you will embark to cross Lake Rico, reaching the opposite shore after approximately 20 minutes of sailing in front of the imposing south face of the Perito Moreno Glacier.
Upon arrival at the refuge, the group will be met by specialized mountain guides, who will divide them into subgroups and accompany them throughout the entire route.
The hike begins with a trail along the moraine for approximately 2 hours, where you can observe different panoramic views of the glacier and the forest.
Big Ice is a highly personalized tour: groups on the ice will have up to 10 people, accompanied by two mountain guides, who will provide crampons, helmets, and harnesses and explain basic safety rules.
The physical demands are high, both in the forest and on the ice, where the surface is uneven but firm and safe.
Once on the glacier and with your crampons, the world takes on a new perspective: blue lagoons, deep crevasses, enormous sinkholes, magical caves and the unique sensation of being in the heart of the glacier.
You'll spend approximately three hours exploring the hidden corners of the world's most unique glacier. Along the way, mountain guides will help you learn more about the ice and its surroundings, allowing you to appreciate the glacier's magnitude and enjoy views of neighboring mountains such as Dos Picos, Pietrobelli, and Cervantes. You'll also have half an hour to have lunch and marvel at this place of incomparable beauty.
After completing the glacier hike, you'll begin the return journey along the same path until you reach the refuge, where you'll have a few minutes to admire this uniquely beautiful place. Upon embarking on the return journey, you'll sail very close to the south face of the Perito Moreno Glacier before returning to "civilization" after enjoying one of the most spectacular ice hikes in the world!
The total duration of the tour, including transportation, is approximately twelve hours and includes a guided tour of approximately one hour to the Perito Moreno Glacier walkways, 7 km from the port. There, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the glacier and explore some of the self-guided trails. If you choose not to use our transportation and go independently, the Big Ice tour lasts approximately seven and a half hours, departing from the port and returning to the same starting point.
Big Ice is located in a natural environment, so the weather conditions and characteristics of the glacier and its surroundings change daily. However, the tour will not be suspended as long as safety conditions allow. We look forward to your visit!
The tour is only suitable for people between 8 and 65 years old.
It is NOT recommended for people with cardiovascular or respiratory complications, physical or mental disabilities, pregnant women, obese women or those suffering from severe vertigo or recent surgeries.
