- Motorhome: In the country of cowboys
A memorable combination of Yellowstone and three of the most spectacular National Parks: Mount Rushmore and several other world-renowned landmarks. Explore legendary figures such as Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane and the historic town of Deadwood, South Dakota. Discover natural wonders such as Old Faithful, geysers, massive waterfalls and experience the culture of the Laramie Indians, cowboys and other men. Oh, and let’s not forget the colossal Rocky Mountains!
Day 1
Pick up your RV and head to Cheyenne, Wyoming, which is the capital city and gateway to Cowboy Country. Try to visit during Frontier Days (www.cfdrodeo), but be sure to book well in advance, as this event draws visitors from far and wide.
✪ 110 miles (about 177 km) to Cheyenne, Wyoming
★ Visit the Capitol Building and the State Museum.

Day 2
Your drive today will be through flat landscapes where native plants abound. Have faith: when you reach South Dakota, you will be rewarded. The campground we recommend has no hookups, showers or facilities, but deer and buffalo roam close to their fences. Coyotes howl, but otherwise it is quiet, and you will not see stars brighter than in this sky. There are other campgrounds to choose from, with full facilities if you prefer.
✪ 270 miles (about 435 km) to Wind Cave National Park
★ Visit the Mammoth Site and Evans Plunge in Hot Springs.

Day 3
Everyone knows Mount Rushmore, one of the most important symbols of the USA. There is also the Crazy Horse Memorial, a sculpture carved into the rock in honor of this famous Indian chief. Don't miss these places!
✪ 40 miles (about 64 km) to Mount Rushmore KOA (via Custer State Park)
★ Visit Badlands National Park, and if you have time, the site of the massacre at Wounded Knee.

Day 4
"Deadwood came over the hill," possibly carrying Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane! Be sure to visit Deadwood and enjoy a drink at the Old Franklin Hotel or even Kevin Costner's bar, who fell in love with Deadwood while filming Dances with Wolves. Remember the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind? It was filmed here, at Devils Tower.
✪ 120 miles (about 193 km) to Devils Tower, stopping in Deadwood on the way
★ Visit Spearfish Canyon. It's an easy detour from Deadwood on the way to Wyoming.

Days 5/6
This drive may seem long, but it’s on the Interstate, so you should arrive at the Buffalo Bill Historical Society in Cody shortly after lunch. It may seem tedious, but please do visit! You’ll be at the entrance to Yellowstone National Park.
✪ 315 miles (about 507 km) to Cody
★ Visit Medicine Wheel just off the more scenic Alt14 on the way to Cody. Once there, don’t miss the Remingtons and Russells at the Whitney Gallery of Western Art.

Days 7/8
A scenic drive through Shoshone Canyon to the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Then you’ll drive 40 miles (about 64 km) to Grant Village, where you’ll camp. Expect occasional traffic jams as people stop to enjoy the wildlife. You might see a moose with its calves, a bear or a group of deer. Everyone stops to watch these interesting animals. Just before Grant Village, turn right towards Old Faithful, the famous geyser that shoots thousands of gallons of water up to 150 feet high at regular intervals every day.
✪ 100 miles (about 161 km) to Grant Village Campground in Yellowstone National Park, which is generally open from the third weekend in June through the third weekend in September
★ Visit the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone with its twin waterfalls, one of which is twice as high as Niagara, the Fountain Paintpot, and many other geothermal pools and geysers.

Day 9
22 miles (about 35 km) further on is the southern entrance to Yellowstone National Park and access to Grand Teton National Park. Visit the Colter Bay website to see just how majestic the Grand Teton Mountains are. Open from June to September, this campground isn’t cheap, but it’s worth it for the location.
✪ 40 miles (about 64 km) to Colter Bay Village on Jackson Lake
★ Visit Flagg Ranch Resort, between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.
www.gtlc.com/rv/colter-bay-rv-park
Day 10
Say goodbye to the Grand Tetons and head across the Great Divide Basin to the town of Lander. Along the way, you’ll pass through the Wind River Indian Reservation, the homeland of the Shoshone and Arapahoe Indian tribes.
✪ 140 miles (about 225 km) to Lander
★ Visit Fort Washakie and the graves of Sacajawea and Chief Washakie, the last chief of the Shoshone Tribe.

Day 11
The name Laramie makes you think of the Wild West, doesn't it? Well, long ago, Laramie was a bustling railroad town. They built the regional prison there. In Wyoming National Park, you can peek into the cells where "desperate men" like Butch Cassidy served their sentences.
✪ 235 miles (about 378 km) to Laramie
★ Visit Saratoga Hot Springs' Hobo Pool, located off the highway.

Day 12
On this last night of your trip, you’ll stay in Fort Collins, the city that Money Magazine named the best place to live in the United States in 2006. Nestled in the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, this is an ideal place to relax after visiting so many places and seeing so many spectacular landscapes over the past few days.
✪ 75 miles (about 121 km) to Fort Collins Lakeside
★ Visit the Anheuser-Busch brewery to see their wonderful horses and enjoy a Budweiser. You might also want to visit one of the many microbreweries.
