Pompeii Ruins Tour: What to See
Leaving the Sorrentine Peninsula behind, in approximately 45 minutes we'll reach the entrance to the Pompeii archaeological site. Here, our tour guide will wait for everyone to pay their entrance fees. Then, the tour of the Pompeii ruins can begin.
For two intense hours, you'll experience a journey through time. During the 1st century, this city was chosen by Roman patricians as one of their favorite destinations. Within a few years, Pompeii became a renowned city, with famous buildings and amenities, including a modern, fully equipped seaside resort. Pompeii's population was around 15,000. Then, in 79 AD, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried it. About two-thirds of the city was covered by meters of volcanic ash and pumice. Thanks to this tragedy, today Pompeii, along with Ercolano, is the best-preserved example of a Roman city. Imagine a system of city walls with seven entrance gates, all leading to the Forum, the center of daily life in the city.
Here are the main public buildings, the municipium, the courthouse, the granary, and the spaces dedicated to markets. Our tour guides will introduce you to some of the thousands of artifacts (over 9,000) found in Pompeii. These include amphorae for transporting oil, wine, and fish sauce, measuring tools, casts of victims, marble statues, crockery, pots, and pans. Besides trade objects, being a seaside resort, Pompeii was full of amenities, from baths and theaters to temples and villas. The luxurious houses are worth a visit. The House of Menander, the House of Lovers, the House of the Vettii, the Villa of Diomedes, and the Villa of the Mysteries are among the best things to see here. The thermopolia were also decorated with frescoes. The baths were centers not only for bathing but also for socializing. As you will see, Pompeii was large enough to support 150 bars and taverns that were used primarily by the poor or those who could not afford a private kitchen.
Climbing Mount Vesuvius
After Pompeii, you'll enjoy something completely different. The bus will take us to an altitude of 1,000 meters (0.6 miles), where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Here, you can decide to simply explore this lunar environment or climb to the top of Mount Vesuvius. Please note that it takes about an hour and a half to climb to the top, so there isn't enough time to get there and back on this tour. Just being there is enough for many of us. The last time Vesuvius erupted was in 1944. The tour is safe, and all safety systems are in place to protect visitors. However, this volcano is still active and could erupt at any time!
