- Guided tour of Florence by Dante Alighieri
During the tour, you'll discover "Fiorenza"—as Dante called Florence—at a time when the city didn't yet boast Giotto's Campanile, Brunelleschi's Dome, or the Palazzo Vecchio. In Dante's time, Florence was made up of narrow streets, stone and timber houses, towers, small churches, and workshops. We'll walk the same paths the poet walked, exploring monuments, plaques, historical figures, houses, towers, and streets mentioned in his work.
The tour begins in Piazza del Duomo, home to the city's oldest building: the Baptistery of San Giovanni. In the Middle Ages, this square marked the entrance to Florence and is the beginning of the so-called "Dante District." Looking up, you'll see inscriptions with passages from Dante engraved on the ancient Florentine towers.
We'll visit the place where he is believed to have been born and where he first saw Beatrice. We'll pass by the Dante Study Center and the Ponte Vecchio, where, according to legend, the conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines began, dividing the city into two rival factions.
We'll continue to the heart of medieval Florence, Piazza della Signoria, and Palazzo Vecchio, where Dante's famous funerary mask is kept. We'll end this incredible tour in Piazza Santa Croce, before an imposing marble statue of the poet, holding the Divine Comedy in his right hand.
