- Tour of the City of Rethymno including the Arkadi Monastery and Margarites

The tour begins with a visit to the first stop, Margarites, a small traditional village located in the Rethymno region. The village is known for its unique pottery tradition, its picturesque alleyways, and its well-preserved architecture.
Next, we went to the Arkadi Monastery, an important landmark of Cretan architecture and culture, notable for its magnificent church facade, rich spiritual tradition, and flourishing fine arts. However, the Holocaust of 1866 gave the monastery a prominent place in history, transforming it into an enduring symbol of freedom and heroism, recognized worldwide.
Our final stop is Rethymno, one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Greece and one of the most beautiful in Crete. We will visit the charming historic center of Rethymno, with free time for an optional lunch.
Finally, we will visit the Venetian fortress of Fortezza, built atop a low hill above the city of Rethymno. The hill is known as Paleokastro (meaning "old castle" in Greek), suggesting the existence of a previous structure on the site. This imposing fortress was built between 1540 and 1570 by the Venetian maritime power as a defense against Turkish pirates. More than 100,000 Cretans in forced labor and over 40,000 pack animals were used in its construction. Despite this, Fortezza was conquered by the Turks in 1646. After various events throughout the following centuries, only the outer fortifications remain intact, and some buildings are still undergoing restoration.
The fortress is visible from virtually every point in the city and offers a panoramic view of Rethymno. Visitors enter through the East Gate, via an imposing arch.
After the visit, we continue along the north coast of the island, along the Cretan Sea, passing the coastal villages of Bali, Fodele and Agia Pelagia, until we reach the city of Heraklion, where the tour ends at 6 pm at the Cretan Spiti Travel terminal.
