An hour west of Guadalajara, discover Guachimontones, a pre-Hispanic treasure in Jalisco. This site, the epicenter of the Teuchitlán Tradition, arose around the Tequila volcano.
Guachimontones flourished between 200 and 400 AD, declining around 900 AD. Its ceremonial center features stepped cylindrical structures, ball games, amphitheaters, and terraces. The site features concentric circular structures, reflecting a political and ritual design. These structures, used for the worship of gods such as Ehecatl (God of the Wind), reveal access restricted to the ruling elite and the priestly caste. Although exploration continues, it reveals a peculiar architectural style known as Guachimontón, characterized by mounds and stepped circular structures. Although it covers 90 hectares, only 1.3% has been explored. At its peak, it was home to approximately 40,000 inhabitants.
UNESCO recognition.
In 2006, Guachimontones, along with the Agave Landscape and the former industrial facilities of Tequila, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, recognizing its historical and cultural importance.
