Primordial salty oceans formed 3.8 billion years ago; 250 million years ago, salt crystallized from a massive lake in Europe. Later tectonic movements formed the Alps.
Salt was used for preservation as early as 4,000 BC. The Celts mined it in Dürrnberg, and in the 12th century, the prince-archbishops of Salzburg promoted trade.
Since the 17th century, the Dürrnberg salt mine has been the oldest demonstration mine in the world. Today, Salzburg Salt Worlds tells its story.
