- Jewish Circuit: Immersion in the Jewish Culture of Pernambuco
Our cultural tour begins with a panoramic view of the Pina neighborhood, an area historically linked to a Jewish family. It is said that in the 17th century, during Dutch rule, the neighborhood was known as Ilha Cheira-Dinheiro (Smelly Money Island), a nickname reflecting its owner's reputation for stinginess.
We'll continue past the first bridge built in Brazil, designed and built by a New Christian. The original foundations of this bridge could be seen until the late 19th century, and today, alongside its original design, stands the Maurício de Nassau Bridge.
Our next stop is the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the first in the Americas, located on the former Rua dos Judeus (Jewish Street). This 17th-century building was built by New Christians and Jews who returned or arrived with the Dutch. Today, the synagogue houses the Jewish Cultural Center of Pernambuco, which features a memorial, a reconstruction of the former synagogue site, exhibition rooms, a documentary on local Jewish history, and a book and souvenir shop.
To end the tour, we will take a break at a cafe where we will taste a typical Jewish sweet, during a moment of coffee and chat about the Jewish influence in Pernambuco.
