Activity description
We depart El Calafate to embark on an unforgettable journey. We'll traverse spectacular landscapes, beginning with 33 km along Provincial Route No. 5 to the east and then 67 km north along the iconic National Route No. 40. During the journey, you'll witness the majesty of Lake Argentino, the Santa Cruz River, the La Leona River, and its picturesque valley, all framed by a privileged view of the Andes Mountains, with the iconic Cerro Fitz Roy as a backdrop.
Historic stop at Hotel La Leona
We'll make a brief 15-minute stop at the charming Hotel La Leona, a place rich in Patagonian history, before continuing on to Lake Viedma and the slopes of Cerro Los Hornos. This stop, at Estancia Santa Teresita, will be our gateway to the impressive world of the Petrified Forest.
Exploration and walking among ancient fossils
Around noon, you'll witness your first glimpse of a surprising natural depression harboring petrified logs and fossil remains from the distant past. Our guided hike will take you through this unique landscape, where you'll discover gigantic fossilized logs up to 1.20 meters in diameter, testament to a time when this region had lush flora. You might even find dinosaur fossils, revealed by the wind in this protected terrain.
Outdoor lunch
We'll take a break in the middle of this fascinating place to enjoy an outdoor snack, consisting of a delicious ham and cheese sandwich, salad, fruit, muffin, and water.
A unique landscape and a pleasant climate
The natural depression and protection of Cerro Los Hornos create a microclimate in the steppe, with generally dry and pleasant conditions. The tranquility of the environment invites you to connect with the history and immensity of Patagonia.
Return with additional stop
In the afternoon, we'll begin our return journey, with a final stop at the iconic Hotel La Leona to rest and enjoy the surroundings.
