Behind the scenes...
The Necropolis Bus Company began in the 19th century as a private bus service. Necropolis vehicles—or 'Carcass Coaches' as they were known to Londoners—were capable of transporting the deceased, pallbearers, and up to 52 mourners (without standing) to their final resting place. Each bus had a conductor/chief mourner on board and a special siren or 'mourning whistle' to warn pedestrians of the buses' approach. The sound of the whistle caused gentlemen to remove their hats and bow their heads as a sign of respect.
From ashes to ashes...
The regular service operated until 1967, when a tragic fire at the company's South Dulstead depot razed the building and destroyed nearly the entire bus fleet. Only one vehicle was recovered from the flames, and it remained locked in storage for 40 years. Now, it has been restored to its original design and is operated by Necrobus as a tourist service in central London.
From bus to bus...
The bus is painted in the company's traditional midnight black color. The interior seats are arranged "railroad-style" for comfort and so passengers can openly grieve and offer condolences. Decorative features include lamps and window curtains, which were always closed if a coffin was stored in the vehicle overnight. This is based on the superstition that a departed spirit can become trapped by its own reflection in the glass and be unable to pass on to the other world. It also helped keep bodies cool during the summer months. Notes: Please note: All customers must have a valid ticket to board a tour.
