- Laguna Esmeralda Trail - Comfort and Adventure.
The adventure begins as we follow National Highway 3 toward the entrance to Ushuaia. The imposing Olivia and Cinco Hermanos mountains guide us along the way. In Tierra Mayor Valley, we begin a 5-km (10-km round-trip) trail toward Laguna Esmeralda.
The valleys we'll hike through are the result of erosion caused by massive glaciers in the past, and today we can see the remains of those glaciers reflected in the color of the water. After receiving instructions on the use of crampons and hiking poles, we enter an ancient subantarctic forest, once home to loggers and now home to beavers.
Finally, we reached the lagoon. This time of year, we had to skirt it to reach our refuge, crossing rocks and streams on a challenging hike. An experience that will surely remain etched in our memories.
The summit offers a cozy shelter, and the campfire comforts us after the hike. A delicious mountain stew, pleasant conversation, and a moment of companionship complete this experience. A warm, comforting cup of coffee is essential as we admire the landscape before beginning the return journey, reinvigorated by the energy of the south.
