Enjoy a river cruise in Oxford and choose between a picnic or afternoon tea. Savor delicious treats while taking in the stunning views.
River Cruise with Picnic
We traveled through the city, passing famous landmarks including Christchurch College and Meadows, the University's boathouses and racecourse, the Head of the River, and Folly Bridge. From the river, we appreciated a side of Oxford's heritage rarely seen by visitors. Picturesque Osney Island, its beloved allotments and gardens, and the majestic ancient Port Meadow are off the tourist trail but represent some of Oxford's most beautiful and intriguing landscapes. Port Meadow, a vast area of common land, has remained little altered since prehistoric times and is home to an abundance of plants and birds. At the top of Port Meadow lies Godstow. Godstow was the final destination of Alice Liddell and Lewis Carroll when they followed an identical route to ours to compose "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." It is also the site of Trout Island, an inspiration for another Oxford literary icon, C.S. Lewis, and his stories about the land of Narnia.
Your picnic lunch is provided by the riverside restaurant, The Folly, and typically includes*;
A selection of sandwiches
Homemade quiche or pie of the day
Homemade scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream
Elderflower Press
Served in a traditional picnic basket with napkins, crockery and glasses (to be returned to the crew at the end of the cruise)
Drinks to take on board can be purchased at the departure point.
Afternoon Tea Cruise
This relaxing afternoon cruise sets off downstream from Folly Bridge, passing through Oxford's most famous stretch of the River Thames. Following the University Race Trail, we pass Christ Church Meadows, the University College Boathouses, and other landmarks on our way to Iffley Lock. This is a frequently busy and vibrant stretch of river, where training rowing teams, rowing boats, and pleasure boats jostle for space on the river, a wonderful display of Oxford in action. Passing through the lock at Iffley is an experience in itself. The river scenery and fascinating buildings combine to create a perfect photo opportunity. Beyond Iffley, we travel to the tranquil water meadows surrounding Oxford, where there are numerous opportunities to spot wildlife among the verdant banks and overhanging willows. We return home to Rose Island, a favorite destination of Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell on their river voyages.
Onboard the boat, we serve a delicious afternoon tea hosted by the renowned riverside restaurant, The Folly. The traditional menu includes*.
A selection of sandwiches, homemade scones with strawberry jam, clotted cream, a selection of cakes, tarts or petit fours and tea
Drinks to take on board can be purchased at the departure point. Notes: No refunds will be given for missed or delayed arrivals.
