A Tour of Route 40 and Route 7 to the Border with Chile
One of the most fascinating experiences for anyone visiting Mendoza is heading towards the Andes Mountains along the iconic Route 40 and Route 7, which follow the course of the mighty Mendoza River. This route reveals breathtaking landscapes, historic villages, stunning natural formations, and spectacular views of the highest mountain in the Americas: Aconcagua.
Uspallata Valley
The journey begins with a crossing of the Uspallata Valley, an Andean oasis surrounded by mountains and vegetation typical of the high desert. Uspallata is a welcoming village, a strategic point on the Andes crossing, with historical and cultural significance. It was through here that General San Martín led part of his army towards the independence of South America.
The Penitents
Climbing the mountain range, the next highlight is Los Penitentes, a former ski resort that, even outside the snow season, enchants with its natural beauty. The surrounding mountains, with shapes reminiscent of kneeling monks—the "penitents" for which the place is named—create a dramatic and impressive backdrop.
Inca Bridge
Just ahead is one of the most iconic points along the way: Puente del Inca, a natural geological formation in the form of a bridge that crosses the Las Cuevas River. The structure, colored by mineral sediments, was once used as a passageway by pre-Columbian peoples and houses the ruins of ancient thermal baths. It's a magical place where geology, history, and legend collide.
Aconcagua Viewpoint
Following Route 7, you'll reach Aconcagua Viewpoint, offering a privileged view of the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere, at 6,960 meters. It's a defining moment of the trip—gazing at the giant mountain that commands awe and admiration, surrounded by glacial valleys and majestic walls.
Las Cuevas
Almost on the border with Chile lies the small village of Las Cuevas, the last stop before the international crossing. Located at an altitude of over 3,000 meters, the village boasts rustic buildings, alpine scenery, and a peaceful atmosphere. It's also the starting point for trails leading to the Christ the Redeemer of the Andes Statue, perched high on the mountain.
Christ the Redeemer Tunnel – Border with Chile
The journey culminates at the Christ the Redeemer Tunnel, the main border crossing between Argentina and Chile through the Andes. Nearly 3,100 meters long, the tunnel crosses the Andes and connects the two countries, serving both tourists and freighters.
More than just a connecting infrastructure, the tunnel represents unity and peace between nations, symbolized by the statue of Christ the Redeemer located in the nearby mountains.
This high-mountain itinerary is a true Andean adventure, with grand landscapes, historic villages, and iconic landmarks that combine nature, history, and spirituality. An unforgettable experience for those who want to explore the soul of the Andes.
