- Regular High Mountain Tour along the River

A drive along Route 40 and Route 7 to the Chilean border.
One of the most fascinating experiences for those visiting Mendoza is to travel towards the Andes Mountains along the iconic Route 40 and Route 7, which follow the course of the imposing Mendoza River. This route reveals breathtaking landscapes, historic villages, surprising natural formations, and spectacular views of the highest mountain in the Americas: Aconcagua.
Uspallata Valley
The journey begins with a crossing of the Uspallata Valley, an Andean oasis surrounded by mountains and vegetation typical of the high desert. Uspallata is a welcoming village, a strategic point in the crossing of the Andes, with historical and cultural importance. It was through here that General San Martín led part of his army towards the independence of South America. The landscape, marked by ochre tones and snow-capped mountains in the background, is an invitation to contemplation.
Los Penitentes
Continuing up the mountain range, the next highlight is Los Penitentes, a former ski resort that, even outside the snow season, enchants with its natural beauty. The surrounding mountains, with shapes reminiscent of kneeling monks—the "penitentes" who give the place its name—create a dramatic and impressive setting.
Puente del Inca
Further along is one of the most iconic points of the route: Puente del Inca, a natural geological formation in the shape of a bridge that crosses the Las Cuevas River. The structure, colored by mineral sediments, was once used as a passage by pre-Columbian peoples and houses ruins of ancient thermal baths. It is a magical place where geology, history, and legend meet.
Aconcagua Viewpoint
Following Route 7, you reach the Aconcagua Viewpoint, which offers a privileged view of the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere, at 6,960 meters altitude. It's a memorable moment of the trip—observing the giant mountain that commands respect and admiration, surrounded by glacial valleys and majestic cliffs.
Las Cuevas
Almost on the border with Chile lies the small village of Las Cuevas, the last stop before the international crossing. Located at an altitude of over 3,000 meters, the village boasts rustic buildings, alpine scenery, and a tranquil atmosphere. It is also the starting point for trails leading to the Christ the Redeemer of the Andes statue, situated high in the mountains.
Cristo Redentor Tunnel – Border with Chile
The journey culminates at the Cristo Redentor Tunnel, the main border crossing between Argentina and Chile through the Andes. Nearly 3,100 meters long, the tunnel traverses the mountain range and connects the two countries, being used by both tourists and cargo transporters.
More than just a connecting infrastructure, the tunnel represents unity and peace between nations, symbolized by the Christ the Redeemer statue installed in the nearby mountains.
This high mountain route is a true Andean adventure, with magnificent landscapes, historic villages, and iconic landmarks that blend nature, history, and spirituality. An unforgettable experience for those who wish to discover the soul of the Andes.
