Expedition through the Andes: From Villavicencio to the Border with Chile
This itinerary through the mountains of Mendoza offers one of the most scenic and exciting experiences in the Andean region, combining spectacular landscapes, impressive geological formations, and historical landmarks that celebrate the connection between Argentina and Chile. The journey takes in mountain trails, natural viewpoints, and places full of cultural and spiritual significance.
Villavicencio Caracoles Viewpoint
The tour begins with a climb through the winding curves known as Caracoles de Villavicencio, a stretch of mountain road filled with switchbacks, arid landscapes, and panoramic views. At the top, the natural viewpoint offers a spectacular view of the valley below, contrasted by the dry, jagged mountains in the background. It's one of the most photogenic spots on the journey.
Paramillo Cross
Continuing the climb, you reach the Paramillo Cross, a landmark of great symbolic and religious significance, located in the heart of the Andes Mountains. Built as a symbol of faith and protection for travelers and mountaineers, the cross stands at an altitude of over 3,000 meters and offers stunning views of the surrounding area—especially in the early morning hours, when the mountains are bathed in a golden light.
Uspallata Valley
The descent leads to the Uspallata Valley, one of the most fertile and populated areas of the foothills of the Andes. This Andean village, surrounded by colorful mountains and curious rock formations, was historically an important waypoint on trade and military routes across the Andes. Today, it is a haven of tranquility with a strong cultural and natural appeal.
Inca Bridge
Further on, the trail reaches the impressive Puente del Inca, a natural bridge-like formation created by thousands of years of geothermal action and mineral sedimentation. The site, in addition to its unique beauty, has great historical value—it was used as a crossing by indigenous peoples and, later, by colonizers. Near the bridge, you can still see the ruins of an ancient thermal complex that welcomed visitors seeking healing and relaxation.
Aconcagua Viewpoint
A few minutes later, a must-see stop: the Aconcagua Viewpoint, the ideal vantage point to admire the majesty of Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas, at nearly 7,000 meters. The viewpoint offers a privileged view of the mountain and Aconcagua Provincial Park, a protected area that preserves this natural giant and its biodiversity.
Las Cuevas
The last Argentine town before the border is Las Cuevas, a small village located over 3,000 meters above sea level. With rustic architecture, high-altitude landscapes, and a climate typical of high altitudes, Las Cuevas is a resting point for travelers and mountaineers, as well as a base for those wishing to climb the Christ the Redeemer Statue of the Andes, located at the top of the mountain during the summer months.
Border with Chile: Christ the Redeemer Tunnel
The crossing between Argentina and Chile takes place through the iconic Christ the Redeemer Tunnel, an international tunnel dug beneath the Andes that connects the two countries amidst the snow-capped mountains. At over 3,000 meters long, the tunnel is a landmark of engineering and integration between the nations, symbolized by the statue of Christ the Redeemer installed at the highest point of the crossing.
This itinerary is a true crossing of the Andes—a journey through legendary roads, historic valleys, and awe-inspiring landscapes, ideal for those seeking adventure, contemplation, and connection with the grandeur of nature.
