Activity description
The Cabanas Foundation is a private, non-profit foundation created to conserve the 'Cal Gerrer' building and to promote the Arpí family's ceramics, the Marilyn Monroe Archive and the work of the Cabanas-Alibau brothers.
The headquarters of the Cabanas Foundation are located in the former Arpí Ceramics Factory, popularly known as Cal Gerrer. This unique pre-modernist building, documented in 1851 and included in the Municipal Real Estate Catalogue, is located in the center of Sant Cugat del Vallés, next to the Monastery, and is notable for its decorative façade, which includes pieces manufactured in the factory itself.
Inside there are three permanent exhibitions and a room for temporary exhibitions.
Arpí Ceramics Factory
The building's musealization process was a project designed to preserve the memory of what was once the most important ceramics factory in Vallès and surrounding areas, and which is currently the only ceramics factory-house in Spain. Its renovation allowed for the recovery of traditional elements and spaces of the former pottery, where a collection of ceramic works is on display.
The saga of the Arpí potters, originally from Terrassa, dates back to the 17th century, and through their work, they have continuously filled three centuries of history dedicated to the art of ceramics. The exhibition aims to highlight the symbiosis created around ceramic production between tradition, history, and creative spirit. The public is shown a selection of these works, such as balusters, corbels, and capitals, as well as a collection of decorative ceramic pieces, in which the combination of functional and artistic aspects intertwine.
Cabanas-Alibau Brothers
The Cabanas-Alibau family, born in Sants, Barcelona, and established in Sant Cugat in 1922, has had one of the most important careers in the local artistic field. The exhibition's various rooms are divided into three areas, offering an anthology of the work of the three brothers: Joan, Francesc, and Miquel.
Marilyn Monroe Archive
This exhibition is presented from the particular point of view of its author, Frederic Cabanas, an artist from Sant Cugat who has been collecting objects and documents, mainly books about the American actress, for over 35 years.
This is the first museum dedicated to Marilyn Monroe in Europe, offering visitors the opportunity to be seduced by both Marilyn's artistic sensibility and the warmth of the collection's atmosphere.
Viewpoint
An important part of the museum is the viewpoint, the small terrace crowned by the sculptural work by Frederic Cabanas that presides over the roof, and the balcony that offers the most beautiful views of the Monastery and the Collserola mountain range.
