Activity description
This in-depth tour will allow you to explore Montevideo's main attractions. It includes visits to the Old City (Ciudad Vieja), the Port Market, the Palace of Parliament, and much more.
Depart directly from the pier and board a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle with excellent local guides who are knowledgeable about Montevideo's history and interesting facts. The eclectic city of Montevideo is also the capital of Uruguay and ranked 8th in the 2013 MasterCard Global Destination City Index for Latin America.
Your first stop is the historic Ciudad Vieja neighborhood, where you can see beautiful colonial-era buildings. The old part of the city is occupied by Spanish military fortifications whose stone walls define the boundaries of the fortified city of San Felipe y Santiago, guarded by the Ciudadela fortress. We'll also see the Solis Theater, the Cabildo, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Torres Garcia Museum, and other museums. There are also many galleries, cafes, and antique shops.
Next, we'll head to Plaza Independencia in the city center. Here you'll see the statue and mausoleum of General Artigas, a Uruguayan national hero, as well as the presidential offices, Palacio Estevez, Palacio Salvo, and the Puerta de la Ciudadela. Continuing on, we'll see the Palace of Parliament, inaugurated in 1925. Its symbolism and neoclassical architectural style represent the country's democratic values.
From the Parliament, we'll take a stroll to the Mercado Agrícola Montevideo (MAM), one of the last iron markets in Montevideo. What began as a humble fruit and vegetable stand in 1913 has expanded into a shopping center, occupying an entire block and offering a variety of food, drinks, and local products. Today, vendors still sell fresh fruits and vegetables. In 2006, the building was remodeled and helped revitalize the entire neighborhood.
After an introduction to Montevideo's history, we'll head to the Obelisk of the Constituents. This bronze and granite obelisk was unveiled in 1938 as a tribute to the authors of the nation's first constitution, dated 1830. The sculptor of this work of art is the renowned José Luis Zorrilla de San Martin.
We'll continue to Parque Batlle, where you can stroll through the city's largest public park and green space. Afterwards, we'll stop at the La Carreta monument, created in 1934 by Jose Belloni. Next to the monument, we'll also see the famous Centenario football stadium, inaugurated in 1930 for the World Cup, in which Uruguay won. On July 18, 1983, it was declared a World Football Historic Monument by FIFA, the only building of its kind in the world.
Afterwards, we'll pass the beautiful sands of Pocitos Beach and stop for a photo op at the Montevideo sign. Admire the picturesque view from here as you gaze out over Pocitos Bay.
We'll conclude the tour in the Punta Carretas neighborhood with a stop at the Punta Brava Lighthouse, also known as the Punta Carretas Lighthouse. Weather permitting, you can enter the lighthouse and climb to the top if you wish.
Stop for a quick look at the Port Market (Mercado del Puerto) and admire the iron structure that was built in Liverpool. Today, this place is one of the city's most traditional gastronomic centers, where visitors can sample delicious Uruguayan beef. A large number of artists also perform in the surrounding area, transforming the streets into grand theaters.
This tour is perfect for those short on time but looking for a comprehensive overview of the city. Reserve your spot on this special tour today.
