- Entrance to the Musée De Orsay
The Musée d'Orsay is housed in a former railway station that opened in 1900 for the Paris Universal Exhibition. It operated as a railway station until 1939, but after the Second World War it fell into disrepair and was nearly demolished in 1960. It was only in 1977 that the idea of transforming it into a museum was born, which was completed in 1986. The building still preserves the charm and original architecture of the railway station.
The museum houses a vast collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, as well as sculptures, decorative arts and architectural elements. On the ground floor, side rooms display works from the period 1848 to 1870, while the central area highlights impressive sculptures. The upper floor houses pieces from the prosperous period between 1874 and 1886, including works by masters such as Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin and Monet, as well as an elegant ballroom decorated to the nines.
