ITINERARY
Depart Barcelona aboard one of our comfortable buses to Montserrat. Together with your guide, you'll take the cogwheel train to the center of Montserrat, enjoying stunning views. World-famous for its rocky landscape, Montserrat Mountain was declared a National Park in 1987 to protect its cultural and natural heritage.
Follow your local guide and discover the monastery's history and architectural style. Fall in love with the fusion of Gothic and Renaissance styles in its basilica and sanctuary. Discover that the site's importance stems from the legend that tells of the miraculous appearance of a representation of the Virgin and Child Jesus in one of the mountain caves, Santa Cova. Visit this wooden carving, now preserved in the monastery church. The figure is popularly known as La Moreneta (The Moreneta) due to a reaction of the varnish over time, which darkened it.
Montserrat is closely linked to spirituality. Today, a community of 80 monks lives there, following the rule of Saint Benedict. Therefore, in addition to the main monastery, the mountain is home to a large number of churches and hermitages, some of which are now abandoned.
Your guided tour includes a tasting of excellent local liqueurs and a visit to the Audiovisual Space. After the guided tour, you'll have free time to access the basilica and visit La Moreneta, admire the fabulous landscape, and visit the market selling local agricultural and traditional products. *Museum: presents a wide variety of archaeological pieces and works ranging from medieval times to avant-garde art. Admission is not included in the tour.
*Hiking trails: The mountain is full of trails for all levels. For fantastic panoramic views, we recommend hiking to Cruz de São Miguel (approximately a fifteen-minute walk from the monastery). Notes: * Appropriate clothing and footwear are required to enter Montserrat: blouses, shorts or sandals are not permitted.
* Remember that the climate is mountainous and depending on the season you will need warm clothing or rain gear.
* Please note that the tour includes walking visits, we suggest you wear comfortable clothes and shoes and a good predisposition to walk.
* Check-in is scheduled 15 minutes before tour departure. Failure to show up at check-in may result in forfeiture of the tour.
