Valparaíso, the 'Jewel of the Pacific', as the city is known, is considered one of the most interesting cities in South America, thanks to its picturesque multicolored houses and narrow streets, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
The first stop is Cerro Florida, to admire La Sebastiana, the house-museum of Pablo Neruda (Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1971 - admission not included). Continue along a scenic road through the hills, from where you can enjoy beautiful views of the city and the ocean. Then, climb Cerro Concepción and stroll along the famous Paseo Atkinson and Paseo Gervasoni, while our guide tells the story of the foreign immigrants who arrived in Valparaíso during its golden age (before the opening of the Panama Canal, where it was still the main port in South America).
Then, head down to Muelle Prat and discover Plaza Sotomayor, one of Valparaíso's main squares, home to some of the city's most traditional landmarks, including the Old Customs House - now part of the Chilean Army's Naval Zone, the monument to Arturo Prat, considered a national hero of the War of the Pacific, and other French-style buildings dating back to the 17th century.
Finish your tour with a funicular ride up to Paseo 21 de Mayo for stunning views of the port. Your last stop will be at Cerro Playa Ancha to visit the Merchant Marine Lookout, with its stunning amphitheater overlooking the Pacific.
