Valparaíso is shaped like a natural amphitheater on the Pacific Ocean coast, with much of the city perched on the hills in disorderly harmony, and a tangible and intangible heritage embodied in the customs, traditions and particular lifestyle of its inhabitants, called "porteños".
Our guide will meet you in Plaza Sotomayor, in front of the Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes (National Council of Culture and the Arts). Begin with an introduction to the city, revealing its illustrious past as a commercial port that remains one of the most important in South America. Stroll through the former Customs House—now part of the Chilean Army's Naval Zone—and see the historic buildings surrounding the square, all inspired by 17th-century French architecture.
Climb Cerro Alegre and Cerro Conecpción in original funiculars—all declared national heritage sites—and enjoy the best views of the city and the ocean from their observation decks. This area was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, for its colorful houses perched at crazy angles, connected by a gigantic maze of streets, long staircases, and viewpoints. Here you'll find several boutique hotels, restaurants, bookstores, and craft shops.
Then, descend to the city center by funicular and explore the "old town," full of beautiful architecture and narrow streets. Finish your tour with a trolleybus ride through the port area: this local public transport is considered a "rolling heritage" and is the second oldest transport service in South America, operating since 1952. Notes: * Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
* The tour does not operate in the rain (in case of cancellation due to weather conditions we will propose an alternative date or process a full refund for the service).
* This tour does not operate on the following days: September 18th, December 25th and January 1st
