The tour begins with a walk through a unique area where you can see fossils and petrified logs. It's ideal for those who enjoy the outdoors and have an adventurous spirit. A moderate level of fitness is required, as the route involves approximately three hours of walking, interspersed with uneven terrain.
We left El Calafate via Provincial Route 5, traveling 33 km east. We then headed north via National Route 40, covering another 67 km. Along the way, we admired Lake Argentino, the Santa Cruz River, the La Leona River and its beautiful valley, as well as panoramic views of the Andes Mountains, including the imposing Mount Fitz Roy.
We make a brief 15-minute stop at the historic Hotel La Leona before continuing west, following Lake Viedma for another 10 km. We arrive at the foot of Cerro Los Hornos, at Estancia Santa Teresita, around 11:30 a.m.
From this point, we have our first glimpse of the impressive depression in the ground where the petrified logs lie. We begin our exploratory walk, during which we observe a large number of petrified logs scattered across the surface, some measuring up to 1.20 meters in diameter. These logs are testament to a period when the climate was different and allowed for the development of abundant flora.
Halfway through the hike, we take a break for lunch. During the hike, it's also possible to occasionally find fossil remains of various types of dinosaurs. The area is protected from the wind by the natural depression in the terrain and the Cerro Los Hornos, offering a dry and generally pleasant climate, typical of the steppe zone.

The tour operates daily from October to April, departing at 9am, with the exception of December 24th, 25th and 31st, January 1st.
Transfers are included for all hotels in El Calafate. Transfers to temporary apartments are not included.
It is recommended to arrive 15 minutes before the agreed meeting point time.
