We'll reach the imposing Perito Moreno Glacier, where we'll have three hours of free time to explore the walkways. The distance from El Calafate to the glacier is 80 km, almost entirely on a paved road that traverses both the steppe and the mountainous region. From the beginning of the journey, we're captivated by beautiful scenery.
Leaving the city, we'll see Lago Argentino and its Redonda Bay on the right, a haven for a wide variety of birds, including black-necked swans, flamingos, steamer ducks, gulls, and cauquéns. The landscape is dominated by the vibrant yellow of the grasslands known as coirón, with the white coirón and petiso standing out.
For the first 40 km, we'll cross the Patagonian steppe until we reach the entrance to the National Park, where the vegetation changes to tree species of the Nothofagus family, such as ñires, guindos, and lengas. We'll also encounter canelos and flowers of various colors, with the notro standing out for its intense red hue, typical of the Patagonian Andean forest.
Upon arriving at the Perito Moreno Glacier, we'll be struck by its majesty. We'll walk along the walkways, which offer different perspectives of the immense ice wall. It's essential to follow the signs and remain within the walkways at all times, respecting the park's guidelines. Park rangers play a vital role in preserving the natural beauty and are available to provide useful information about the area.
